Jee: Where Journal of Exercise Rehabilitation stands: recent themes and future directions in exercise rehabilitation
Recent articles from the Journal of Exercise Rehabilitation (JER) were reviewed and compared with recent worldwide literature. The top thematic areas in recent (2024–2025) JER issues include applied exercise interventions and functional rehabilitation, neuromuscular and neurorehabilitation approaches, studies on pediatrics and special populations, exercise and lifestyle research, and public health-related topics. Reviews, methodological papers, and editorial perspectives were also well represented.
Overall, JER presents a balanced mix of applied clinical trials, device and technology validation studies, and systematic reviews, with a strong emphasis on functional outcomes across diverse age groups and clinical populations. The focus of JER’s recent articles generally aligns with global research trends. Worldwide, high- quality reviews and guidelines highlight major priorities such as telerehabilitation and digital delivery models, exercise interventions for chronic disease and postacute populations, the integration of digital and artificial intelligence (AI)-based tools for exercise quality assessment and remote monitoring, comparisons of delivery modes (home, clinic, hybrid), and a growing emphasis on long-term adherence, health equity, and cost-effectiveness.
JER’s focus on devices, robotics, neuromuscular stimulation, gait analysis, and rehabilitation for older adults and pediatric populations maps well to these global priorities. However, global literature places greater emphasis on telerehabilitation, AI-driven automated assessment, and cost-effectiveness analyses. Local factors such as regulations, patient preferences, and available clinical infrastructure must also be considered. Compared with global trends, JER has maintained a stronger emphasis on traditional, hands-on rehabilitation methods over remote or technology-driven interventions.
In conclusion, JER’s recent publications reflect a preference for direct, person-to-person rehabilitation approaches rather than automated or telehealth-based methods. Future research could place greater focus on long-term follow-up studies, cost-effectiveness analyses, and interventions for specialized or underserved populations to further align with worldwide trends. I look forward to the JER publications in the final quarter of 2025, featuring both traditional and innovative approaches, to help shape the future direction of exercise rehabilitation.
